<< 1970-71 Los Angeles Lakers | 1972-73 Los Angeles Lakers >>
The Los Angeles Lakers once again went nearly an entire season without a 37-year old Elgin Baylor in the lineup. However, it didn’t matter in 1971-72 as Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain were helped by the emergence of Gail Goodrich.
The Lakers not only were the best team in basketball this season, they broke two records. One for having the best regular season record of all time at 69-13, a record that has since been broken twice. Second, the Lakers won an absurd 33 consecutive games, a record that remains to this day and will likely never be broken.
In the Western Conference Finals, they got a chance at revenge against the 63-19 Milwaukee Bucks, and they got the job done. They won in six games to set up an NBA Finals matchup against the New York Knicks. In their NBA-record 14th Finals appearance, the Lakers managed to win their sixth championship, inching them closer to the Boston Celtics who were at 11.
