<< 1984-85 Los Angeles Lakers | 1986-87 Los Angeles Lakers >>
The Los Angeles Lakers were riding high in the 1985-86 having just defeated the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. They rolled through the regular season to a 62-20 record and the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.
Meanwhile, an angry Celtics team dominated the Eastern Conference, going 67-15 and breezing through the postseason in order to reach the NBA Finals once again.
Things weren’t so easy for the Lakers out west, as they would learn how hard it id to make it to four consecutive Finals. In the Conference Finals against the Houston Rockets, they simply ran out of gas, as a 23-year old Hakeem Olajuwan helped them win four straight after losing Game 1 to defeat the Lakers.
In the Finals, the Celtics would have absolutely no issues with the Rockets. They would win in six games to bring their championship total to 16 and win what would be the last championship of the Bird era.
