While Michael Jordan was making headlines across the league, his Chicago Bulls were not at the level as some other contenders. This included the Los Angeles Lakers, fresh off another championship in the Showtime era.
The Lakers were once again too formidable an opponent for anyone in the Western Conference to stop them. They went 62-20 in the regular season, and got past a seven game series in multiple rounds before reaching the NBA Finals in back-to-back years.
Although the Lakers were tested, the Eastern Conference was far more intriguing. The Bulls, Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, and Atlanta Hawks were all strong contenders, but it was the bad boy Pistons who wound up on top with a chance to beat the Lakers.
In the ultimate battle of opposing styles, the flashy Lakers and gritty Pistons went down to the seventh game. There, an all-time performance from Finals MVP James Worthy put L.A. over the top to win their second straight championship and 11th in franchise history.
