The NBA expanded once again in the 1990-91 season, going from 25 teams to 27. And while the Los Angeles Lakers dynasty was over, they remained competitive as the newest legendary team began their reign.

Behind Magic Johnson and James Worthy, the Lakers cruised to a 58-24 record and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. However, it was the Chicago Bulls making headlines after going 61-21 with Michael Jordan at the helm.

The Lakers dominated their first two playoff matchups to get to the Western Conference Finals, where they would play the team with the NBA’s best record, the Portland Trail Blazers. Johnson was simply incredible in this series, and L.A. would win in six games to get back to the NBA Finals.

In Johnson’s ninth NBA Finals appearance, the Lakers would face Jordan and the Bulls, who had no issues plowing through the East. Jordan was nearly perfect in the series, averaging 31.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 11.4 assists per game en route to a 4-1 series win. L.A. failed to secure their 12th championship.
