The 1991-92 Los Angeles Lakers season came with the most shocking news in franchise history. In the weeks before the regular season began, Magic Johnson tested positive for HIV and was forced to retire, leaving the Lakers and the entire city of L.A. reeling.
James Worthy quickly had to become the leader on a team filled with many young players, with the help of A.C. Green and Sam Perkins. They were nowhere near the same team, but they managed to go 43-39 and sneak into the playoffs at the No. 8 seed.
They were swiftly eliminated in four games by the Portland Trail Blazers, who sought revenge after the 1991 Western Conference Finals. The Trail Blazers would continue to roll through the West to secure their second Finals appearance in three years.
Their opponent this season would be far more difficult than the Detroit Pistons team they lost to in 1990. They would face Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, fresh off their first championship.
Jordan would take complete control of the series once again to bring the Bulls their second straight championship in a 4-2 Finals win.
