Dwight Howard spurned the 2013-14 Los Angeles Lakers by leaving for the Houston Rockets in free agency. Meanwhile, Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash missed nearly the entire season with injuries. This left the Lakers with an aging Pau Gasol and very little talent otherwise, leading to one of the worst seasons in team history.

L.A. finished 27-55, the sixth worst record in the NBA, missing the postseason outright for the first time in over 10 years. Given the dearth of talent and assets moving forward, there was also a lack of hope surrounding L.A. after 2014 ended.

In the Playoffs, the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs would reign supreme once again. LeBron James made it to his fourth consecutive Finals and would face Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs there.

This would go much differently from the year before, as the Spurs won in five games and put an end to the James-Dwyane Wade-Chris Bosh Heat teams.
