Bill Walton Encouraged Luke to Consider Future After Basketball

The Walton family has been fortunate enough to have two family members make it to the NBA.  Bill Walton had an incredible college career, and his success carried into the NBA.  Despite his individual accolades, Walton’s most memorable moment was when his son, Luke, was drafted into the NBA.

It is clear that Luke inherited many of Bill’s genes, Luke has the height, the basketball skills, but also the back pains.  Bill Walton was plagued with back pains for a large part of his career, and it made his life miserable.  Luke has also dealt with this injury lately, and it has forced him to miss many games.

The back problems became severe last season, and Bill advised his son that he should retire from the NBA. Bill did not want his son’s life to be ruined due to his back problems.  Bill went through the same difficulties during his playing day, and it has had a negative effect on his life ever since.

Like any father, Bill wants to the best for his son, and he is trying to save his son’s life.  “I don’t want to see him in pain. Bill said. “I don’t want to see the long-term ramifications.”  Walton later went on to say that health is far more important than the game of basketball.

As of right now, Luke Walton still plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. But, Luke may eventually listen to his father if his injuries prevent him from playing.
