Despite missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season, the Los Angeles Lakers can look at Jordan Clarkson’s play as one of the positives from the 2014-15 NBA season. Clarkson has been a bright spot for the Lakers with his recent play warranting a potential spot on the All-Rookie Teams.

The second-round selection didn’t come in with the expectations that come with being a lottery or first round pick, but has still shown development by learning whenever he gets the chance. In an interview with AM 570 LA Sports, Clarkson discussed his growth and how he learns from the veterans on the team, particularly Bryant. He mentioned how he has no problem getting knowledge from Bryant:

It’s easy to listen to him.

It is also interesting to note how Clarkson is learning from two of the bests to play the game. In addition to Bryant, Clarkson also received tutelage from Steve Nash as the two worked out together during the All-Star break. Clarkson’s play since then has been impressive. In 21 games, Clarkson has averaged 15.7 points and 5.1 assists while shooting 49.1 percent from the field.

Not only have Clarkson’s individual numbers gone up, so has the team’s general play. The Lakers have been competitive in most of their recent games and have been playing with with an energy that was absent early in the season. Clarkson has been part of the reason for the improvement. He goes out each night and competes, even if it might worsen the Lakers lottery odds.

Clarkson’s future with the Lakers appears to be secure despite him having a non-guaranteed contract for next season. It will be interesting to see how the team rebuilds during the off-season with the team’s ample cap space and protected top-five draft pick. Clarkson has the ability to play both guard positions, but the team could be looking to add a point guard like Rajon Rondo or Goran Dragic through free agency.
