Back in 2006, Kobe Bryant made NBA history. The superstar willed the Los Angeles Lakers to victory over the Toronto Raptors scoring a career-high 81 points. A decade later, another iconic player is making history and could potentially match or surpass Bryant’s highest point total at some point in his career.

Reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry is torching opposing teams on a nightly basis as the Warriors strive for greatness in their title defense. Ahead of Sunday’s game against the Lakers, Curry is averaging an NBA-best 30.7 points per game at an incredibly efficient rate while playing only 33.9 minutes a night.

With Curry near unstoppable offensively this season, the 27-year-old scoring 81 points or more isn’t totally beyond the realm of possibility. It seems realistic that Curry could reach that number considering the way he’s playing right now, but the one-time NBA champion isn’t so sure. Curry doesn’t think there’s a chance he tops Kobe’s 81 via Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News:

“Not a chance,” Curry told Los Angeles News Group. “There’s a reason why people are still talking about that game to this day. It’s so special.”

Curry’s best scoring performance this season came against the New Orleans Pelicans back on Oct. 31. Curry scored 53 points in 35 minutes helping dispatch the Pelicans with relative ease. Curry has cracked the 50-point mark three times this season and has surpassed 40 or more 11 times thus far.

Along with Curry playing at an incredibly high level, Golden State is well on their way to making history this season with the best record in NBA history (72-10) in their crosshairs.
