After sitting out last week’s game against the San Antonio Spurs, D’Angelo Russell is apparently still suffering from knee soreness. The second-year guard made his return to the lineup in Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bulls but was limited to just 23 minutes. Russell finished with eight points and seven assists while shooting just 3-for-11 from the field. Russell attempted nine three-pointers and never showed comfort attacking the basket on his knee.
Head coach Luke Walton recently said he either wants Russell to be aggressive or take time off to rest his knee. Russell is undoubtedly at his best when attacking out of the pick and roll. His ability to see the court, size up and finish in the paint make him hard to defend out of the pick and roll. Russell showed complacency with staying at the three-point line, something Walton was not a fan of.
The Lakers are going to be cautious with Russell, so don’t be surprised if he sits out tonight’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
