Kobe Bryant Compares Choosing Oscar Award Over Lakers Championships To Picking Between Kids

Kobe Bryant accomplished everything there is during his 20-year NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers. From All-Star selections to All-NBA teams, regular season MVPs and Finals MVPs, Kobe did it all.

Of course, most important to Brant was winning, and he did that with five NBA championships as well. Then after he retired from basketball, Kobe accomplished something that arguably trumped it all when he won an Oscar for Best Animated Short for his ‘Dear Basketball’ poem.

Bryant then surprised many by saying that winning his Oscar felt better than winning any of his championships. Some were a little dubious of Kobe’s claim, and after a little time Kobe backtracked slightly.

Appearing on “The Jim Rome Podcast,” Bryant said it’s difficult to choose one because they’re like his kids:

“They’re like my kids. It’s hard to say, even though I’m saying I enjoyed the Oscar more. Yeah, it’s hard for me to say that. It’s tough, because without basketball I wouldn’t be where I am today. But at the same time, I love what I’m doing right now. Like, I absolutely love it. That’s not to take anything away from the game.”

There is no doubt that his basketball career has put Kobe into the position that he is now. In fact, the poem that won him the Oscar was his retirement announcement.

But there also isn’t any doubt that Kobe truly does love what he’s doing now. He has said time and again that he is enjoying what he does now and doesn’t miss the NBA and when he’s doing things like winning Oscars, it’s hard to argue.

Regardless of what accomplishment felt better, Kobe did what very few were able to in the NBA and now he’s continuing that success in the world of film.
