The 1948-49 Minneapolis Lakers were the first team of the storied franchise. In their first season as a part of the BAA — Basketball Association of America — they were one of just 12 teams making up two divisions. Led by George Mikan, who was the scoring champion this season, the Lakers finished second in their division at 44-16.
The Lakers went 4-0 in the divisional playoffs and reached the BAA Finals against the No. 1 seeded Washington Capitals. It took six games, but the Lakers would secure their first of 17 championships in their first season of existence.
