In the 1952-53 NBA season, the league once again had 10 teams, making it the first time since its inception that the same amount of teams played in consecutive years. The Minneapolis Lakers had a chance to defend yet another championship against tough competition.
For the fifth year in a row, George Mikan was the team’s leader and one of the league’s best players. He helped bring the Lakers to a 48-22 record, the best of all 10 teams. Minneapolis breezed through the first round once again, but faced a tough challenge in the Fort Wayne Pistons in the divisional final.
They needed all five games to surpass them, and then won the Finals in demanding fashion, 4-1, over the New York Knicks. This was the Lakers second straight title and their fourth in five years.
