The Los Angeles Lakers came into the 1984-85 season on a mission, as they had just dropped two straight NBA Finals including one to the Boston Celtics. The trio of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and James Worthy were truly beginning to hit their stride by this year.
The Lakers went 62-20 to lead the Western Conference while the Celtics went 63-19 atop the east. Everything was being set up for another Lakers-Celtics battle, meaning all of the pressure was on L.A. to break through the losses that plagued their past.
The Lakers went 11-2 in their first three postseason series’ while the Celtics went 11-4. With relative ease, both teams reached yet another Finals. If the Lakers were going to start rewriting history, they would have to win this season.
Game 1 was about the worst start imaginable for L.A. in a game that became known as the Memorial day massacre. The Celtics defeated the Lakers 148-114 to grab a 1-0 series lead. This would essentially be it for the Celtics though, as outside of a two-point win in Game 4, the Lakers had complete control the rest of the way.
They won Games 2, 3, 5, and 6 to win the series 4-2 and finally get over the hump of beating the Celtics in the NBA Finals. The Lakers now had nine championships to the Celtics 15.
