The 1986-87 Los Angeles Lakers hit the ground running after missing the finals for the first time in four years. Magic Johnson averaged 23.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 12.2 assists to secure the Most Valuable Player award while leading the Lakers to a 65-17 record.
The Boston Celtics remained highly competitive in the Eastern Conference, going 59-23 en route to the No. 1 seed. This meant that once again, the most likely Finals matchup was Lakers vs. Celtics.
The Lakers went 11-1 in their first three series’, with the one loss coming against the Golden State Warriors in the second round. The Celtics had a bit more trouble, needing the full seven games to get past the Milwaukee Bucks and Detroit Pistons.
Either way, it was still Lakers-Celtics at the end of the day. With the Lakers refreshed and the Celtics battered from their 17-game Eastern Conference run, L.A. was able to win in six games to get the 10th championship in franchise history.
