As James Worthy began to decline in 1992-93, so did the Los Angeles Lakers. A full year after Magic Johnson’s retirement, they simply could not get back to any sort of contention. They fell to 39-43, four games worse than the previous season. However, they still managed the No. 8 seed for the second season in a row.
Last year’s No. 1 seed, the Portland Trail Blazers, took care of them easily. And while the 1993 No. 1 seeded Phoenix Suns wouldn’t have it as easy, they would still get by in a 3-2 series win.
Charles Barkley, the regular season MVP, would lead the Suns all the way to the Finals, their first appearance since 1976.
Out East, the story remained the exact same. Michael Jordan was incredible and the Chicago Bulls could not be stopped. They went to the Finals hoping for a three-peat against Barkley and the Suns.
It would be one of the more difficult Finals appearances of the Jordan era, but it didn’t matter as the Bulls won in six to win three straight titles.
