After three consecutive championship runs, the 2002-03 Los Angeles Lakers learned what many dynasties before them realized: it is nearly impossible to win four straight championships. In their run at four in a row, the Lakers struggled while Shaquille O’Neal missed 16 games.
Even still, the Lakers finished 50-32 for the Western Conference’s No. 5 seed. In the first round, they got past the Minnesota Timberwolves in six games, but faced a tall task in the NBA’s best team, the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs flexed their way to a 4-2 win, ending the Lakers run.
The Spurs would go on to win the West and the NBA Finals, securing their second ring of the Tim Duncan era and making it five straight years where either the Lakers or Spurs won the championship.
