During halftime of Friday night’s game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Houston Rockets at the Staples Center, the Lakers honored the 40th anniversary of their historic 1971-72 team.

The 1972 Lakers finished with a record of 69-19 in the regular season, which was the best regular season record in league history until Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls won 72 games in 1996. This particular Lakers squad also won 33 consecutive games, which is the most consecutive wins in any of the major professional sports in the United States.

There were many star players on that famed team, including Gail Goodrich, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, and Pat Riley.

Elgin Baylor, who retired nine games into the season due to nagging knee injuries, was also in attendance for the ceremony.
