Along with Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain, Lakers Nation would also like to wish one of the newest members to the Lakers family a happy birthday. Meeks turned 25 on Tuesday, August 21, and this birthday may be one of the sweetest of them all with the veteran guard recently signing a two-year deal with the Lakers.
The acquisitions of Steve Nash, Dwight Howard and Antawn Jamison have dominated the headlines for the Los Angeles Lakers this summer, but the signing of Meeks via free agency may also prove to have a profound impact off the bench for the Lakers next season.
After spending his first three seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers, Meeks has taken his talents to Tinseltown. With Meeks coming off the bench at shooting guard, the Lakers have improved in many different areas. Meeks brings youth, shooting touch from outside and a hunger for a championship.
The debate over the past month or so was whether or not to sign other free agents guards available like Michael Redd, Tracy McGrady and most notably Leandro Barbosa to fill the void off the bench, but the Lakers ultimately decided to take a chance of the former Kentucky standout and that decision may pay dividends next season and beyond.
