Lakers Dominate NBA Competition in Social Media Once Again

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to pave the way for NBA teams in social media with more Twitter followers and Facebook likes than any other team in the league according to Lisa Dillman of the L.A. Times:

“But a quick snapshot is a telling one. The Lakers’ Twitter feed (@Lakers) has the most followers among NBA teams, as does its Facebook page, 2.7 million and 14.6 million, respectively.”

These numbers really don’t come as much of a surprise to many with the Lakers arguably the most popular team in the league. Along with always putting a championship-caliber team on the floor every single year, the Lakers organization also makes an effort to reach out to the fans with social media and always stays on top of any changes in technology.

The real surprise is the team that comes in second place behind the Lakers. A logical choices for a team to follow the Lakers is the New York Knicks, Miami Heat or Boston Celtics. Unfortunately for those three popular franchises, none of them were able to slide into second.

Oddly enough, the team that does come in second in terms of Twitter followers is Dwight Howard’s former team, the Orlando Magic with 1.08 million. As for Facebook, the Chicago Bulls are behind the Lakers with 6.98 million likes to their credit.

The additions of Steve Nash and Dwight Howard have definitely boosted the following for the Lakers on both social media platforms. Along with these two superstars coming onboard, the Lakers also benefit from both players being very active on these platforms in terms of reaching out to fans. Howard took a break in posting on Twitter during the “Dwightmare” over the summer, but is back to his old ways keeping his fans updated daily.

Pau Gasol and Metta World Peace also stay active on Twitter. World Peace actually interacts more than most, and is always staying in constant contact with his fans.
