The Los Angeles Lakers fired coach Mike Brown yesterday and the front office’s search for a new head man began instantly. There have been many names thrown out there, but the first choice to fill the void is no doubt Phil Jackson. Jackson is considered the greatest coach in NBA history and if he rejoins the Lakers, Jackson will be looking for his 12th championship ring.

Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Lakers believe there is a 95 percent chance that the Lakers reunite with Phil Jackson.

The Lakers are moving quickly toward hiring Phil Jackson as their next coach, with one person in the organization calling it a “95%” chance he will return for a third tour with the team.

The Lakers plan on meeting with Jackson on Saturday morning to make sure he is interested in the job. The unknown 5% in their equation is the chance Jackson doesn’t want to fill the vacancy created by the Friday firing of Mike Brown , either because of health reasons or other unknown issues.

Jackson left the Lakers after the 2010-11 playoffs, with Mike Brown being his replacement. Now it seems as though the roles will switch and Jackson will take over the Lakers’ bench with Brown no longer employed.

If the Lakers do end up signing Jackson, the Triangle offense will once again make an appearance in Los Angeles. Jackson won five titles in Los Angeles with that system, and it is something Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Metta World Peace are very comfortable with.

The Los Angeles Lakers are the most talented team in the NBA and if they end up getting Phil Jackson, they will have the greatest coach of all-time running their sidelines, a formidable combination.
