Lakers Nation Sound-Off: The Willful Lakers

NBA: Houston Rockets at Los Angeles LakersAuthor: Eric Dominguez
Subject: The Willful Lakers

This year has been an extremely heart-stopping, frustrating and obstacle-ridden Lakers basketball season. The team has worn many different disguises; they go looking like a championship contender to a lottery type team from one game to the next. They have plucked and tugged at the heartstrings of the Lakers Nation, causing us to cheer or call for someone’s head (Mike D’Antoni).

Despite all the ups and downs, the team still somehow made the playoffs. I know fighting for a playoff spot in the last game of the regular season is not familiar territory for this historic franchise. Yet, given the turbulence of this season, it is an accomplishment.

Many of the media heads have called this season a tremendous embarrassment. I can see why someone might say this, but I do not agree. I feel that all the struggles, injuries and season adjustments display a headstrong mentality to the team that has been absent for the last couple of years.

There have been numerous times when this team could have called it quits; coaching changes, injuries, media scrutiny and the death of a great owner were all reasons enough.

Yet, here they are still fighting. Whatever happens the rest of this season, I won’t be disappointed. I appreciate what they have done. This team appears to be more determined to defeat obstacles instead of having the obstacles defeat them.

I know championships are the number one priority. However, it is important to be aware of how the Lakers have competed against more than just opposing teams this year. The “never say quit” attitude should be respected, admired and ornamented.

Maybe this is nothing more than wishful thinking, but like this Lakers team, I’m not ready to hang up my jersey just yet.
