Lakers News: The Lakers Are Reportedly Interested In Nick Young

Outside of re-signing All-Star center Dwight Howard, it seems like the Lakers are putting a premium on perimeter shooting. The Lakers have reached out to a few shooters including, but not limited to, Chris Copeland, Francisco Garcia, Jordan Farmar and now Nick Young, according to Dave McMenamin.

Young is a native of Los Angeles and is a guy who can create his own shot off the dribble, which has been a problem for the Lakers in recent years.

Outside of Kobe Bryant, the Lakers haven’t really had a guy who could create his own shot off the dribble, leaving the offense a bit stagnant, especially late in the shot clock. Young averaged 10.6 points per game for the 76ers while shooting 35 percent from three point range.

One of the downsides to Young is, well, his ability to create his own shot. He often will take his ability to create, and turn them into ill-advised shots that can create run out opportunities for the opposition.

Young’s game is similar to that of J.R. Smith in the sense that, when he’s on, he can be exciting to watch. But when he’s off, it’s brutal to watch. Smith won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award, and the Lakers can definitely use a guy like Young off the bench to give Bryant the rest he could have used down the stretch of this past season.

It’ll be interesting to see if any of these free agents decide to come to Los Angeles. Shooting the three-ball has been a constant problem for the Lakers for years, and finding a consistent shooter could open up Mike D’Antoni’s offense, and create space for the bigs in the middle.
