LeBron James in 2014, Kobe Says It’s Not That Big Of A Stretch

Kobe Bryant Kobe Bryant told Lakers Nation on Wednesday that he’s not interested in taking a huge pay cut for the 2014-2015 season of rebuilding. As a matter of fact, after putting on his business cap, Kobe said he plans on getting paid “as much as [he] possibly can.” So what does this mean for the Lakers landing a huge free agent in 2014? It has already been reported that the Lakers are, at the very least, targeting free agents like LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony in 2014.

Does Kobe actually think there’s a possibility LeBron could find his way into a purple and gold jersey in 2014? In an exclusive interview on Wednesday at Kobe’s Basketball Academy in Santa Barbara, Lakers Nation asked Kobe what incentive LeBron would have in helping Kobe win another ring? Once Kobe retires, James will inevitably be chasing the Black Mamba ring count, so what would entice him to increase Kobe’s? Bryant didn’t seem to think LeBron to the Lakers was that big of a stretch.

“It’s that argument that goes on forever,” Kobe told Lakers Nation at his basketball camp at UC Santa Barbara. “You don’t want to help someone else kind of increase their ring count, but he’s already increased Dwyane’s, so I don’t think it’s that big of a stretch.”

Kobe, of course, said he couldn’t speculate on what LeBron would do in 2014, but it sounds like the rumors that Los Angeles is a serious potential landing spot for LeBron, aren’t all that far off. The Lakers, though, would need to leave plenty of cap space for that to happen, and Kobe at least for now, isn’t prepared to take any dramatic pay cuts. And, LeBron hasn’t given any inclination that he’s even thought about being a free agent in the summer of 2014.

For now, the Lakers will continue on their path of building a competitive 2013-2014 roster, without hindering the exciting possibilities of 2014.
