Lakers News: D’Antoni Says That Dwight Leaving Was In His DNA

Orlando Magic v Los Angeles LakersIt was well known before Dwight Howard departed from the Lakers that he and Mike D’Antoni didn’t necessarily see eye-to-eye in regards to the Lakers game plan on the court. So when Howard announced that he was heading to Houston for a fresh start, many pointed to D’Antoni as the main reason why he left.

On Monday D’Antoni joined ESPNLA 710 to discuss a multitude of things ranging from the teams’ health and last season’s failures, to his optimism moving forward with the new pieces the Lakers have acquired.

When the topic of Dwight Howard was brought up, D’Antoni had an interesting response in regards to why he felt Dwight left the Lakers:

“It’s hard for me to understand why he left a place like LA. That’s kind of mind-boggling a little bit. That’s in his DNA”

Nevertheless, D’Antoni is still excited about the Lakers chances this upcoming season even without Dwight. He believes that Pau Gasol will be better than ever as the feature big, and anticipates using a more extensive roster, as opposed to the seven man rotation he widely used during crucial games last season.

Although it is evident that the Lakers lost a lot when Dwight decided to take his talents elsewhere, it’s going to be interesting to see how this team responds to the early doubts of how good they will be next season. One thing is for certain, this team won’t count themselves out, and they’ll be ready to give their all every game they play next season.
