NBA News: Heat, Nets Rumored To Wear Nicknames On Jerseys

Kobe Vino jerseyChanges are coming to NBA uniforms — at least for one game. According to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press, the NBA has informed members of the Miami Heat that they may possibly be wearing “nickname jerseys” in one of their four matchups against the Brooklyn Nets this season. While the NBA has not officially announced their plan, both teams are aware of the possibilities.

Players have began discussing their nicknames and Ray Allen believes it shows growth in the NBA:

“It shows growth in our league and it shows we do adapt to what’s going around us. And we’re still kids, playing a kid’s game. Even though we’re now men playing a kids’ game, we still remember where we come from. Everybody has a nickname and it’s a way to let the fans in a little bit more.”

However, some players like Kendall Marshall weren’t supportive of the idea because basketball is about teamwork, not individuals:

“The nickname makes it more about the individual. It’s still a team sport. Represent your team, your family, and go out there and play.”

However, Kobe Bryant has a different take. He believes that the nicknames give players the ability to improve on their respective brands, according to Darren Rovell.

With players already submitting their nicknames, LeBron James is expected to wear “King James” while Paul Pierce is expected to wear “The Truth.” While their nicknames are well-known, Shane Battier joked about wearing “Batman” on his jersey, but will likely wear “Shaneo.” As of today, the Heat and Nets are the only teams who will take part in nickname jerseys this upcoming season.
