Conspiracies in Lakerland; Are the Lakers Playing Possum?

Written by: Lena Adebowale

Are the Lakers in the midst of a poorly timed losing streak or just playing possum?

Whenever you make a prediction, there is always a risk involved. After watching the Lakers lose two games in a row, I predicted that the team would turn things around and defeat the Golden State Warriors. Needless to say, the Lakers did not bounce back and have lost five consecutive games for the first time this season. Most basketball fans know that April is the time when teams are supposed to gain momentum heading into the playoffs. The Lakers seem to have lost their momentum, but Phil Jackson may have a trick up his sleeve.

The current slump doesn’t look good on paper, but the Lakers lost six of their final ten regular season games last year. We all know how the 2010 season turned out. With the previous record in mind, some believe the Lakers are simply pretending to struggle. The explanation goes a bit like this; the men in purple and gold have rocked the competition to sleep by playing poorly. When the time is right, the Lakers will rise and subject their opponent to a rude awakening.

Some may disagree with this viewpoint, but the game of professional basketball is a business first and entertainment second. The business side of the sport thrives when the favored team faces tough times and upsets. Therefore, the Lakers are merely promoting their business. Rest assured, the Lakers will survive this current losing streak and return to their rightful place on top. The NBA is one of the greatest forms of entertainment, because the most talented teams manage to play their best when it counts.
