Dwight Howard and Stan Van Gundy to Help Florida Public Schools

Dwight Howard may be the newest center for the Los Angeles Lakers and Stan Van Gundy may be without a coaching job, but both of them are still fighting for the same cause. Van Gundy, the former Orlando Magic coach, reached out to Howard and asked for his assistance off the basketball court.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that Van Gundy asked Howard if he would help him raise funding for Florida public schools. Van Gundy wants to raise property taxes in Seminole County and give those students in the the system a better experience.

“Dwight has pledged his support,” Van Gundy said. “He’s a resident of Seminole County, and he’s keeping his house here. I think his history will show that he’s had great concern for kids in the Central Florida community. With him still living here, we asked him to help and he didn’t hesitate.”

A lot had been said about Howard’s and Van Gundy’s relationship and rumors had it that Howard wanted the Magic front office to fire Van Gundy. Although there were times when those two were not on the same page, Howard and Van Gundy accomplished a lot together. Howard became the best center in the league under Van Gundy and the Magic managed to surprise many and get into the 2009 NBA Finals.
