On Wednesday night, the Lakers took on the San Antonio Spurs for the second game in a row. Last Friday in San Antonio, the Lakers fell to the Spurs 119-85. This time, the Lakers had home-court advantage but still could not pull of the win.
First Quarter
Although the Lakers were almost neck-and-neck with the Spurs early on in the game, they soon began to look defenseless allowing the Spurs to go on an 11-0 run. Despite the rough quarter, Kent Bazemore showed a glimmer of hope for the Lakers as he converted on a dunk after stealing the ball from Tony Parker. The Lakers late-quarter push condensed their previously double-digit deficit into a six-point gap going into the second. At one point in the quarter, the Spurs were shooting over 70 percent from the field.
Second Quarter
Xavier Henry had a big impact off the bench as the Lakers attempted to make an early push. After a Henry three, Robert Sacre followed up with a big dunk that cut the Spurs advantage to a mere three points. The Lakers tied the game up half way through the quarter after a driving layup from Ryan Kelly and eventually took their first lead of the quarter. Strong performances from the bench, including 19 points from Henry on the half, helped the Lakers remain competitive. Kelly closed the quarter with a huge dunk, and the Spurs ended up going into the locker room with only a one-point edge.
Third Quarter
The Spurs and the Lakers began this high-scoring quarter with strong performances. For a majority of the quarter, neither team had a lead greater than four points. The Lakers defended the Spurs’ fast-paced offense extremely well, but a three-pointer from Boris Diaw marked when the Spurs began to break away from the Lakers as the lead grew to nine points. With a Bazemore three, the Lakers were able to shrink this deficit. Despite the Lakers efforts at the end of the quarter, the Spurs maintained a five-point advantage going into the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
The fourth quarter got off to a much slower start than the previous quarter. Early on, the Spurs were able to extend their lead to double digits. While the Lakers tried to make another run, the Spurs continued to shoot the ball well. After losing on Friday, the Lakers competed but eventually fell 125-109.
