Once Kobe Bryant went down with a knee injury that would sideline him for six weeks, the Los Angeles Lakers were forced to make a move to help shoulder the load in the backcourt.

As a result, the Lakers signed D-Leaguer Kendall Marshall. No one knew what to expect from Marshall, but he’s been much better than expected in his first seven games with the Lakers.

With head coach Mike D’Antoni recently comparing Marshall to Jeremy Lin, the current Houston Rockets point guard chimed in on Marshall and what he’s seen from him thus far via Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com:

“He’s done a great job,” Lin said when asked about Marshall after the Houston Rockets’ shootaround Wednesday in preparation for the Lakers. “He’s a phenomenal passer and he’s just a smart, smart player. He’s definitely taken advantage of the opportunity and all the injuries that they have and really done a great job. So, I think people are happy for him, for sure.”

Over the course of his first few games with the Lakers, Marshall averaged 9.7 points, 6.9 assists while shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc. Although Marhsall’s averages over seven games won’t turn any heads, the UNC product has really stepped up his game as the team’s starter.

In the three games Marshall has started, the Lakers newcomer is averaging 15.6 points and 12.6 assists per game. Impressive numbers to say the least for a player that was playing in the D-League back in December.

It remains to be seen if Marshall can continue to play at a high level while the Lakers deal with injuries to Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar and Kobe Bryant. Marshall’s future with the team will be uncertain once the team gets healthy, but he’s definitely making the best of his opportunity in the meantime.
