Kobe Gets Cast Off, In Walking Boot, Ready For Therapy

It’s been 10 days since Kobe Bryant had season ending surgery on his ruptured Achilles, and he announced via his Facebook account today that he is already out of his cast and into a walking boot.

“Cast off today. I have zero swelling and virtually no pain. Boot now for a few months. I start therapy…”

It’s great news that Kobe has reported no swelling and little pain and plans to start therapy as soon as possible. The original prognosis for Kobe’s return was 6-9 months and the Lakers are hopeful that Kobe could return for training camp. Before Kobe’s surgery, Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak said that although Kobe being back by training camp might be a bit too optimistic, the start of the season is more realistic.

“I think it’d be aggressive to think he can be ready by training camp. I think that’s a realistic goal for him (November 1) based on what he was talking about this morning.

Either way, Kupchak has stated that they currently have no plans to amnesty Kobe, who is owed $30.5 million in salary next season. Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace, Steve Blake, and Pau Gasol are the only amnesty options on the Lakers roster, and any decision would not take place until July.

The Lakers are currently trailing the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the NBA playoffs, 1-0. Game two will tip-off Wednesday, 6:30PM PST.
