Jordan Farmar is entering his second stint with the Lakers. After playing in New Jersey and overseas in Turkey, Farmar is back in Los Angeles — in an offensive system that better suits his skill set. In Farmar’s player profile, we take a look at what he brings to the table for this year’s Lakers team in his sixth year in the NBA.

Last Season Summary
Jordan Farmar played for Anadolu Efes last season and led them to the semi-finals of the Turkish Basketball League. Farmar averaged 13.7 points per game and shot 54 percent from the field. Farmar also led Anadolu Efes to the quarterfinals of the Euro League, but lost to the eventual champion, Olympiacos. Farmar was teamed up with former Laker teammate Sasha Vujacic, but they were unable to deliver a championship.

Strengths/Weaknesses
Farmar brings some much needed youth to the Lakers, but more importantly his defense will be welcomed with open arms. His on ball defending is something that will improve the Lakers tremendously. Farmar has been known as a good defender since his days at UCLA under former coach Ben Howland. While Farmar is not a big point guard he does have decent athleticism and a good shooting touch.

Where Farmar really excels is his passing and his ability to get others involved. He has a great basketball mind and will be able to fit right in with his former team.  Farmar might have some problem creating his own shot and is better suited as a spot up shooter or running the fast break. Overall, Farmar is a well rounded player and given the opportunity he is capable of making an impact on this Laker team.

Expected Role
Farmar will be an important player off the bench, but with the age and health concerns of Steve Nash, Farmar should see a lot of time on the floor. Farmar could be on the floor with another point guard and he will be counted on to spread the floor and play good defense. Farmar’s time in Europe has helped mature the 26-year-old and now understands that defense is a matter of will. His biggest contribution will be on the defensive end but his shooting range and ability to get others involved will be an added bonus. The Los Angeles Lakers bench is much improved from last year and they have the opportunity of being one of the better second units in the league, with Farmar a big part of that improvement.

This Year’s Expectations
Expect Farmar to improve his numbers from previous years with the Lakers. With Kobe Bryant injured, Farmar has an opportunity to put some points on the board and become an offensive weapon for the Lakers. While Farmar will be assigned to guard the plethora of elite speedy point guards on a daily basis, his offense will be a pleasant surprise. Mike D’Antoni’s offense will benefit Farmar and his style of play. He will enjoy the fast pace and it will go well with his strengths. This year he is expected to contribute off the bench and the Lakers need him to succeed.
