Lakers Awarded $4.85 Million Exception For Steve Nash

Steve Nash

The Los Angeles Lakers have had the worst luck with injuries over the past couple of seasons, and no player has embodied that more than point guard Steve Nash. Nash has struggled to stay on the court since being traded to Los Angeles, and was ruled out for this season during training camp.

The Lakers were recently given a disabled player exception for rookie Julius Randle. Now, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, they have received one for Nash as well:

This exception gives the Lakers another big tool in trying to improve the roster. The Lakers will now be able to sign another player with that exception, but with one this big, it is more likely to be used in a trade and the player must be in the final year of his contract.

No one the Lakers would sign in free agency would be worth that much money, and they would be able to use the exception for Randle in that case. But if a team was looking to get rid of a player for salary cap purposes, the Lakers would be able to take him in with this exception.

No one knows if any roster moves are imminent at this time, but Byron Scott is planning to meet with General Manager Mitch Kupchak, and the roster is likely to be discussed.
