On Thursday morning, The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor dropped a bombshell, claiming that LeBron James could look to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers when he becomes a free agent in 2018. Among other things, O’Connor points out that James has completed his goal of bringing a championship to Ohio, and could look to leave for “sunnier” locations to play with his friends.
O’Connor laid out two scenarios for James to end up in LA. One is with the Lakers, where he plays with a rising core of D’Angelo Russell and Brandon Ingram, along with Paul George, whom he believes will join the Lakers next summer. The other scenario is one where he ends up on the Clippers with his “Banana Boat” friends Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade.
Both scenarios seem far-fetched, to say the least. In 2012, Yahoo! Sports claimed that the Lakers were looking at adding LeBron in 2014. That plan didn’t work out.
Because of the team’s storied history and sunny location, the Lakers will always be linked to the best of the best. But the chances of LeBron leaving the Cavaliers to play with a bunch of young 20-year-olds seems very low.
