The Lakers finally won on Sunday, defeating the Memphis Grizzlies 108-103. While it was nice to see the kids playing well and beating a playoff caliber team, the win brought about mixed emotion for many fans.
With a record of 22-55 the Lakers are now tied with the Phoenix Suns for the second worst record in the league. There are no tiebreakers for worst record, meaning the Lakers and Suns would split the odds on draft night. While the Lakers would still have a 51 percent chance of keeping their pick – down from 56 percent – the importance of that pick cannot be overstated.
If the Lakers keep their 2017 pick, they also keep their 2019 first rounder which is owed to the Orlando Magic. That pick would, in turn, become two second round picks.
The Lakers need to keep this pick, and a five percent change could be the difference.
