The Lakers announced today that they have signed Ryan Kelly, the 48th overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft.
Kelly was was a key player during his tenure (four years) at Duke University. Awards the he achieved include being named ACC player of the week twice in his senior year, and receiving an honorable mention for the All-ACC team. His final year at Duke would be his best in all of his four seasons as he posted averages of 13 points and five rebounds while shooting over 42% from the three-point line.
It is widely known that Kelly has the ability to stretch the floor beyond the three-point arc. If he is going to get minutes this season, it will be because of his ability to consistently knock down the three in D’Antoni’s system.
While Kelly’s role on this team is expected to be limited, he can still grow into a key contributor with time if he learns from the likes of skilled veteran big men like Pau Gasol and Chris Kaman.
This past off-season Kelly had an operation on his foot that he injured during his senior year at Duke. While there has yet to be a timetable given for his expected return date, it is already known that he isn’t expected to be back at the start of training camp come the end of September.
