The Los Angeles Lakers are still feeling the affect of the loss of Jerry Buss. It has only been one day since the sports mogul passed away, and speculation has begun on how the team will be run from here on out.
Many are skeptical on how the Buss children will be at running the Lakers franchise, one that owes much of its success to Jerry. But the Buss camp has come out to say that ownership intends to stay within the family. The six children want to keep the Lakers under the Buss name and will not be putting the team on the market. Jeanie, Johnny and Jim Buss, the three children most usually in the Lakers limelight, manage the trust of the six children which currently owns the team.
Kareem Abdul Jabbar was integral in bringing five championships to the Los Angeles Lakers. Abdul-Jabbar released a statement regarding Buss’ death:
When someone as celebrated and charismatic was Jerry Buss dies, we are reminded of two things. First, just how much one person with vision and strength of will can accomplish. Second, how fragile each of us is, regardless of how powerful we were. Those two things combine to inspire us to reach for the stars, but also to remain with our feet firmly on the ground among our loved ones. Dr. Buss embodied that compassionate entrepreneurial spirit. He strove to reach greater heights without forgetting his community roots. During his stewardship, the Lakers exemplified his personal standards of excellence and became one of the dominant teams in the NBA and a force of good within the community. The man may be gone, but he has made us all better people for knowing him. — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Buss’ memorial service will be held at the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. to honor one of Los Angeles’ biggest icons. This service is for invited guests only and will not be open to the public. Click here for the press release with all the details and to see if you qualify to attend.
