The BIG3 basketball league has turned the heads of many fans during the past two weeks. It has fared better than most expected too. Former players like Cuttino Mobley, Deshawn Stevenson, and Chauncey Billups have shown that they can still play and make big shots.
The league could soon become a mainstay as more notable players might be willing to give the three versus three format a try.
While former Philadelphia 76ers star Allen Iverson has been the most popular player of the league so far, co-founders of the league, Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz, are hopeful that players like Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce show that they can still play at a high level.
According to Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype, the player bothe Ice Cube and Kwatinetz have in mind to one day play in their league is none other than Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant:
BIG3 co-founder Jeff Kwatinetz: "Kobe had just done his farewell
tour and lots of players want a year off. We hope Kobe joins us next year."— Alex Kennedy (@AlexKennedyNBA) July 6, 2017
Having Kobe join the league would undoubtedly make the BIG3 an exciting draw for basketball fans. It would also likely grab the attention of younger fans who watched Kobe play during his days with the Lakers. He could also play an important role of potentially attracting other players like Garnett, Shaq, or Gilbert Arenas to join him.
In an interview with Lakers Nation’s Ryan Ward, Ice Cube talked about how he subtly reached out to Kobe about playing in the BIG3 but think she players are simply waiting to see how the league fares.
It is going to be interesting to see whether Bryant eventually accepts an invitation to the BIG3. After a couple of rough seasons to end his career he could show fans that he still has those moments where he is able to amaze them. The biggest payoff of Kobe joining the BIG3 would be the exposure the league would experience with an all-time great headlining the games.
