Just a couple of weeks ago it seemed as if the drama between Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss and her brother, former VP of basketball operations Jim, had just picked up. Jeanie filed a temporary restraining order on both Jim and Johnny Buss to prevent what was believed to be an attempt to remove her as president of the team.
The brothers were attempting to hold an annual shareholders meeting in which the board of governors are elected and Jeanie’s name was not on the list of nominees. In order for Jeanie to maintain her role as president she must be on the board.
Now it looks as if things will calm down at least for the moment as Mark Medina of the LA Daily News reports that Jim and Johnny have signed a consent agreement that elects Jeanie to the board:
“According to court documents filed Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Jim and Johnny Buss signed a consent agreement on Monday that waives the team’s annual shareholders meeting and elects Jeanie Buss to the Lakers’ board of directors.”
The rest of the board is also listed and, interestingly enough, Johnny is also on the board via Medina:
“In addition to Jeanie Buss, the consent agreement elects brothers Johnny Buss and Joey Buss – president of the D-Fenders development league team – to the board, along with Lakers CEO Francis Mariani and AEG President Dan Beckerman.”
Drama has been surrounding the Lakers for some time now and the fact that it surrounds the front office and owners is not a good look for the franchise. This seems to at least put the drama on the back burner for the time being.
With this situation now handled, Jeanie can focus on turning the Lakers back around as the new regime of Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka are hard at work trying to do just that.
