Lakers News: Dwight Howard Wants Phil Jackson Back in L.A.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ front office is currently scouring the market for the best available head coach to come in and take over for the recently fired Mike Brown. Although there have been some big-names thrown out there as potential candidates like Jerry Sloan, Mike D’Antoni and Brian Shaw, one name continues to circulate as the team’s ideal candidate.

Reportedly, after hearing the news of Brown’s firing, Dwight Howard has let it be known that he wants Phil Jackson to coach the Lakers according to Chris Sheridan of SheridanHoops.com:

“Dwight Howard has told the Los Angeles Lakers he wants them to bring back Phil Jackson as coach,’ a source close to the team tells SheridanHoops.com.”

Obviously, at this point in time, there’s no telling which direction the storied franchise is heading towards in terms of finding a replacement for Brown. Even though all options are being explored, Howard’s opinion is something that must be taken into consideration moving forward.

With the Lakers’ front office still trying to convince Howard to stay beyond this season with a long-term contract next summer, the best way of securing the future of the franchise is doing everything within their power to bring back Jackson.

There are a lot of factors that come into play in terms of bringing back the 11-time NBA champion head coach as he’ll likely want his old coaching staff back and a lucrative deal. If the Lakers’ front office is able to pull this off, the sky is the limit for this revamped squad.

One way the Lakers may have the edge in bringing back Jackson is with the help of Jeanie Buss. With the two still in a relationship and Buss a major part of the organization, there’s a good chance she’ll put in a good word to make this happen.

Another interesting angle to Jackson possibly heading back to the Lakers is the cancelled conference in Chicago a day before the Brown firing. This may be reading too much into the potential re-hiring of Jackson, but the timing is interesting to say the least.
