Former Los Angeles Lakers James Worthy and Sam Perkins were among the honorees for the 13th Annual National Civil Rights Museum Sports Legacy Award. Fomrer NBA All-Star and Memphis native Anfernee Hardaway and former WNBA All-Star Swin Cash were also honored for their contributions to civil and human rights.

The ceremony took place prior to tip-off in Monday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies. It’s part of the NBA’s annual celebration on Martin Luther King Jr. day, with this year’s events marking the 50-year anniversary of his assassination.

Memphis debuted their MLK50 City Edition uniforms that are intended to shine a light on the events leading up to Dr. King’s assassination as well as the ongoing movement for social justice.

Because of King’s ties to Memphis, the NBA ensure the Grizzlies play at home every Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They, along with the Lakers, took a tour of the National Civil Rights Museum on Sunday.

After which, a community conversation was held, featuring Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley and Lakers center Brook Lopez will be discussion guests.

Although he was sidelined by a sprained left knee, rookie point guard Lonzo Ball spoke glowingly about the impact Dr. King had and the steps the NBA takes to ensure his accomplishments and memory live on.
