Dwight Howard is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and remains uncertain about his immediate future.

On Wednesday, Kobe Bryant was asked about Dwight’s pending decision and what the Lakers’ front office should do heading into free agency. Kobe didn’t hesitate to say the Lakers need to lock up the superstar center via ESPN 710:

“Those guys are hard to find, they don’t grow on trees. You have to be able to keep them & lock him in.”

If Dwight ultimately decides to leave the team and sign with the Houston Rockets or another team as a free agent, the Lakers will be in unfamiliar territory. GM Mitch Kupchak will be forced in a difficult position with the team potentially having to move forward without Dwight and possibly prepared to go through another difficult and disappointing season with the current roster.

As of right now, a contingency plan has been disclosed by the team if Dwight signs elsewhere. It remains to be seen what direction the team takes if Dwight decides to leave, but waiting for the talent-packed free agent market in 2014 will likely be the priority number one rather than searching for another superstar this summer.
