Lakers News: Luke Walton Still Wants To Play In NBA

waltonWhen it was announced that Luke Walton would be joining the TWC Sportsnet analysts team for Lakers broadcast this season, it was widely assumed that Walton was retiring from the NBA altogether. Even though he had his best season in years last year, his chronic back issues have rendered him mostly inefficient on as a player.

Walton, however, doesn’t want his career to end just yet and spoke to Dave McMenamin about his plans:

I want to play still. I’ve trained all summer as if I was going to get a call. The call never came, so, I’m going to keep working out […] If nothing happens this year, then I’ll probably admit that it’s officially over.

Walton has already begun developing numerous options off the basketball court. During the lockout in 2011 Walton served as an assistant coach for his former college teammate Josh Pastner at the University of Memphis. He has also sat in on a couple of ESPN 710 radio broadcasts of Laker games, and now of course he has his broadcasting deal with TWC SportsNet. However, Walton continues to hold out hope for one more chance.

Walton has already spoken with the L.A. D-Fenders about a player development deal that would allow him to work out with the team while still fulfilling his broadcasting duties. He is healthy now and with the unpredictability of an NBA season, it’s not out of the question for Walton to receive the call he so desperately wants.
