Washington Wizards v Los Angeles LakersLakers general manager has been silent for most of the off-season as he’s tried to build the Lakers into a competitive team after Dwight Howard left for Houston.

Kupchak has done a solid job in signing veterans and castoffs to one-year minimum deals as the Lakers are hoping a full training camp under head coach Mike D’Antoni and improved health will help their chances this season.

However, the wild card remains to be guard Kobe Bryant who continues to rehab his injured Achilles and Kupchak spoke to Mike Bresnahan of the LA Times about Bryant’s progress:

Obviously, we’re all hopeful and we all know Kobe. When you guess on Kobe, he always tries to prove you wrong.  The reality is he’s doing what he should be doing. He’s making progress probably weekly. Does that mean five months is possible or it’s really going to be eight or nine or 10? We just don’t know.

Bryant doesn’t seem to know when he’ll be back on the court as he’s said it could be as late as November or December before saying that he hopes to be back by opening night.

While it remains uncertain when Bryant will be back, as he’s proven so much in his career, count on Kobe exceeding expectations and coming back ahead of schedule.
