Lakers News: Pau Gasol ‘Probably Not’ Interested In Taking Pay Cut

Pau Gasol 3Once the 2013-13 NBA season has come to an end, the Los Angeles Lakers franchise will have a lot of questions to be answered. Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol will both become free agents next July along with a quite a few others on the team.

As of right now, the Lakers re-signing Kobe is basically a foregone conclusion, but Gasol’s future remains up in the air.

With that being said, Gasol may very well be headed elsewhere after this season if unable to come to terms with the Lakers. Not only is Gasol’s future in doubt even with the regular season yet to be played, but it appears as thought he’s not sold on the idea of potentially taking a pay cut to stay with the Lakers.

Gasol recently spoke with Mark Medina of the L.A. Daily News and expressed no desire to accept a pay cut:

In the interest of the Lakers maximizing their financial flexibility, would Gasol accept taking a significant paycut?

“Probably not,” he said. “You have to explore your options, but I would like to continue to play for the Lakers and maybe finish my career here. But you have to see the cards on the table.”

At this point in time, there’s no telling what will happen with this team once the season comes to an end. Even Kobe’s fate remains to be seen with uncertainty looming about his long-term health. It’d be safe to say something drastic would have to happen in order for Bryant not to re-sign with the Lakers or for the team to part ways with the five-time NBA champion.

As for Gasol, literally anything could happen from the start of the season to the beginning of NBA free agency in July. Gasol’s fate still remains in his hands as he may be able to play his way to a new lucrative deal. Trade rumors, injuries and potential free agents the team may target might derail Gasol’s attempt to stay in Los Angeles, but as of right now he’s a Laker and wants to stay.
