Lakers News: Pau Gasol Undergoes Successful Knee Procedure

Lakers forward Pau Gasol underwent a FAST (Focused Aspiration of Scar Tissue) technique knee procedure this morning after battling with tendonisis in both knees throughout the season. Gasol was the first to inform the public that his procedure went well via his Twitter account.

According to Lakers PR, the procedure was successful and he is expected to make a full recovery. There has been a 12 week timetable given for him to resume basketball activities.

The procedure, in which a probe was inserted into both of Gasol’s knees, was performed by Dr. Steve Yoon of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Group. The purpose of the probe is to direct ultrasound wavelengths into the degenerated knee tissue. This is not a surgical procedure. Gasol is also set to receive stem cell injections administered by Dr. Yoon next week to help stimulate the regeneration of his tissue.

Gasol dealt with a multitude of injuries over the course of the Lakers 2012-2013 season. In December, Gasol missed eight games due to knee tendinitis. The next month, Pau missed five games with a concussion. Finally, in February, Gasol’s plantar faciitis had him sidelined for 20 games. Even when Gasol wasn’t missing games, his knee tendinitis was still an issue and affecting his explosiveness.

Gasol’s future with the Lakers organization still remains uncertain. Pau’s expressed his desire and preference to stay with the organization but also understands the business aspect and has respected Mitch Kupchak for his honesty. Mark Heisler reported on Lakers Nation just a couple days ago that the Lakers ‘plan A’ is to keep Pau Gasol. Hopefully, Gasol’s knee procedure will allow him to play at his potential.
