Two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash is nearing the end of his playing career. At 40-years-old, Nash will likely retire after this coming season following the last year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

With Jason Kidd and Derek Fisher becoming NBA head coaches immediately after retiring as a player, Nash being the next veteran point guard to make the transition wouldn’t be all that surprising. Although Nash has been reluctant to leave the game he loves, becoming a head coach doesn’t seem to be in his immediate future, according to Brett Pollakoff of Pro Basketball Talk:

“Not really,” Nash said Monday, on a conference call with reporters to promote his annual charity soccer game, which will take place in New York on Wednesday. “I’m not necessarily interested in coaching at this point in my life. I would never say never, but it’s not on my radar right now.”

At this point in time, Nash’s immediate future is uncertain. The veteran floor general is one of three players the Lakers have under contract next season, but Nash’s name is starting to get mentioned in trade rumors heading toward the 2014 NBA draft.

Even though the Lakers will have to pay a $1.5 million trade bonus if they send the future Hall of Famer elsewhere, the storied franchise is exploring all options moving forward.

One rumor involving Nash that has started to circulate is a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Lakers would send Nash and the seventh pick in the upcoming draft to Philadelphia in a trade for Thaddeus Young and Michael Carter-Williams.

If the Lakers intend on making a serious pitch to LeBron James and or Carmelo Anthony, Los Angeles may need to find a way to move Nash’s contract. Nash is set to make $9.7 million next season and there’s no telling what he’ll be able to provide in terms of production on the floor.
