This past season was tough for the Lakers not only because of their poor play on the court, but the passing of longtime owner Dr. Jerry Buss in February.

Dr.Buss died on February 18 and the Lakers honored their incredible owner with an amazing tribute prior to the February 20 game against the Boston Celtics.
However, not only is the basketball and Laker community mourning the loss of Dr. Buss, but so is the poker community as the WSOP invited a certain Laker via Twitter to fill his place at the poker table:
Poker misses Dr. Buss. Game. Class. We invite @kobebryant to play in tribute. #sharksvsmamba twitter.com/wsop/status/34…
— WSOP(@wsop) June 10, 2013
While Bryant responded that he won’t be able to attend the event due to his recovery from Achilles surgery, it was an incredible gesture by the WSOP.
Dr. Buss was known so well for owning the Lakers, but he was also known to play in several poker tournaments in Las Vegas. In 2003, Dr. Buss placed second in the World Poker Tour Free Roll Invitational.
Along with entering these specific tournaments, Dr. Buss was seen on NBC’s Poker After Dark on several occasions and would compete with other celebrities.
While Kobe isn’t able to participate due to his surgery, it was an incredible gesture by the WSOP as Dr. Buss’s loss has been felt throughout the Laker and poker community.
