Dwight HowardDwight Howard’s season isn’t over. Well, not technically. Howard’s Lakers can only lose one more game against the Spurs before they’re sent packing. And they have to somehow pull it off without seemingly 90 percent of their roster. With Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Metta World Peace, Kobe Bryant and Jodie Meeks all out due to injury, Howard is basically the last man standing on a sinking ship.

So with this season coming to a screeching halt sometime in the next week, the questions will begin to move ahead to the future. Will Dwight Howard stay in Los Angeles and re-sign with the Lakers? As nearly everybody knows, Howard will be a free agent on July 1, giving him the opportunity to sign wherever he would like. After a season and a half of indecision with Howard leaving Orlando, we’re looking at Dwightmare Round 2 in a matter of months.

But what’s Howard thinking?

According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN Los Angeles, Howard isn’t ready to talk about his future plans quite yet.

While the Lakers have been forthright with their plan to build around Howard, the 27-year-old has been evasive as to whether he sees his future including L.A.

When asked about what the offseason could bring following Saturday’s practice, Howard said, “I haven’t thought about it.”

Whether you believe Howard or not, it’s obvious he’s playing this one close to the chest. After all the bad publicity that came out of his Orlando departure, it’s no surprise that he isn’t anxious to go down that road again. But as McMenamin also points out, Howard may be enticed by the Lakers’ desires to build the future of the franchise around his ever-so-broad shoulders.

So while we wait and see what Howard wants to do, we’ll focus on the rest of the season. Whether that’s 48 more minutes in Game 4 or a few more games before the team finally succumbs to the Spurs is yet to be seen, but until then Howard’s focus is going to be on winning basketball games.

Not next season.
