Steve Kerr was one of the first names to pop up as a prime candidate for the Lakers vacant head coaching position, despite being heavily linked to the New York Knicks position.
On the contrary, however, the Lakers reportedly did not have Kerr on their list of potential coaching candidates, believing he was already too far gone with the Knicks.

It looks like the Lakers were right. The NY Post’s Marc Berman reports that Kerr is likely to take the head coach position with the Knicks, and the west coast team that could possibly change his mind isn’t the Lakers:
According to an NBA source, Kerr likely will make his final decision on accepting the Knicks head-coaching job soon after the weekend. However, one thing that can derail Kerr’s getting hired by the Knicks is if the Warriors lose their first-round series to the Clippers on Saturday and coach Mark Jackson is let go. Kerr, whose family lives in San Diego, may listen if approached by the Warriors.
Kerr being more interested in the Warriors job, assuming it comes open, makes sense considering the Warriors impressive core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and David Lee.
Thankfully for the Lakers, the team has a number of options in the case that Kerr’s interests are elsewhere. Even though some odds makers had Kerr as a favorite, that seems to no longer be the case.
This is the beginning of a long process for the team and names will continue to be thrown around until everything is finalized.
